DAVID VERTESI, TREELINES AND BEHIND SAPPHIRE!!!

Friday, January 21st, MUSIC in Vancouver attended an amazing concert put on by a very talented group of local musicians. We had a great time and managed to take a lot of photos! If you haven't heard of any one of these musicians, I encourage you to purchase all of their songs right away and support local Vancouver music!

Dave Vertesi:
First up was David Vertesi. You may recognize him as a member of Hey Ocean! Tonight he was doing his solo act, but we got a few surprises! He was joined onstage by Peter Carruthers, a member from another local band Said the Whale, and Dan Klenner from Hey Ocean! and The Star Captains. Vertesi has recently started performing his solo act and tonight we had the privilege of listening to songs off his new album Cardiography (which you can and should buy off iTunes). Explaining his songs, Vertesi said that "Music should do one of two things. It should either make teenagers cry, or make old people dance." During his performance, the audience was mostly dancing, but when Vertesi sang Learn to Run, things got a little more "intense" as Dan noted. Dave Vertesi is a very talented musician and he was joined by an equally talented pair! Dave and co. got the show started right!!

Dave even asked the crowd to participate!
Dave: Keytar
Crowd: *cheering!
Dave: Turtle
Crowd: Awww yeaaahh!!

Dan Klenner also plays the keytar (insert cheering here!) sometimes simultaneously with the drums :O

Treelines:
Next to take the stage is a band called Treelines. Treelines formed in 2009 when they released their self-titled debut album (which you can buy from their website). The album was well received and in 2010, they released their second album titled Young Man. Members include Matt Lockhart (vocals and guitar), Steve Lockhart (bass), Matt Kelly (guitar and piano) and Grant (drums). These guys not only had great songs, but their performance was incredible. They were all so into it! When you see a bunch of guys head-banging and smiling up on stage, you know its a good show!

Playing accordion, Rebecca Slaven joined Treelines here for the performance of Canadian Airlines.

By now you're probably wondering about the headband? I know I was.. According to an interview with the band on The Bandsintown Blog, Matt Lockhart states that his eyebrows are an ineffective barrier between his hair and his eyes and therefore he uses the headband as "one giant, extremely efficient eyebrow!"
Matt Lockhart's autograph!! You should also contact them if you would like to book an amazingly enthusiastic and passionate local Vancouver band :)

Behind Sapphire:
With the audience pumped after hearing the first two performers, it was time for Behind Sapphire to take the stage. Listening to the first song of their performance, I was blown away. They are all such talented musicians and the lead singer's voice was indescribable. Sadly, it seemed like a very short set, but we still managed to get all of these pictures (not to mention pictures afterwards with Grant)!! Behind Sapphire is made up of Grant Cassell (vocals), Matthew Mazankowski (guitar and vocals), Steven Ward (drums and percussion), Dylan Murley (bass) and were also joined by Lindsay playing trumpet and bass and Matt on trumpet! Their self-titled album was released in early 2010 and is available on iTunes. These guys were so unique and their music was so beautiful! Everyone was on their feet and couldn't help moving along with the beat. Here are the photos of Behind Sapphire. And don't worry Grant, we didn't get any pictures of your colourful underpants ;)

Here you can see the singer's cape. Sadly we didn't get a picture of his shoes, which were also awesome!

This photo was taken after Matt's glasses fell off because he was dancing so much!

Overall, we had an amazing night!! All of these local Vancouver performers are truly talented and it was a pleasure to see them! They were all nice enough to stick around after their sets to give out autographs, take pictures, and just chat with the fans! Thank you guys for an amazing night that I won't soon forget :)

Music Video Spotlight

We haven't updated any posts recently so I thought I'd share this little video.
This is a video for Death Cab for Cutie's I Will Follow You Into The Dark. What I thought was neat about this video was that this guy is signing the lyrics to the song with American Sign Language. :) It's pretty neat  and there is a fun little ending!

Thirty Seconds to Mars

Do you recognize this symbol?

You may have seen this symbol in many places including empty fields, driveways, on trees, on cupcakes, on walls and in front of landmarks all around the world following the Triad Global Assault. It may have come in the form of masking tape, posters, chalk, human beings and candles burning in the dark. The question is, how did they get there and what were they doing there?
The triad is a symbol used by the band Thirty Seconds to Mars and their latest mission, for their die-hard fans around the world called the Echelon, was to put the triad symbol on anything, anywhere while being creative. This mission produced great results and you can find fan photos of the symbol on the Flickr: Triad Global Assault Page.
The band was started in 1998 by the two brothers Jared Leto (vocals and rhythm guitar) and Shannon Leto (epic awesome drums). Later, they auditioned Tomo Miličević as their lead guitarist. Some fun facts about them include:
- Jared Leto is also a Hollywood star but refuses to play at venues that use his name to advertise the show.
- They got their band name from a Harvard professor's paper which said that the world was advancing so quickly that we are now literally 30 seconds away from Mars.
- Recently, 30 Seconds to Mars released a 13-minute music video for Hurricane (Uncensored, 18+ only please)
Without further ado, here are the photos taken at the show by Thirty Seconds to Mars on September 22nd, 2010 in Vancouver!

Feel free to leave some comments and I might post some more photos or even a video or two!

FUSE Top 40 Countdown

So, it all comes down to ONE. I have to say, I was pretty happy with the selection even if it didn't really show in the last post I wrote. OK GO and Eminem are both very talented artists. Many comments on the FUSE page argued that the vote turned out to be between lyrical talent and a creative music video. Either way, people knew what they were voting for and I think it was a combination of both that helped put one of them on top...

Anyway, congratulations to EMINEM for winning the title of #1 Music Video of 2010 for "Love the Way You Lie," as voted by the fans :)

FUSE Top 40 Videos

I have to say, I am shocked. The Echelon didn't even get 30 Seconds to Mars a spot in the top two. Here is the final round though, and the vote is between Eminem and OK Go! Click here to vote for the FUSE Top 40 Video of 2010!
