Columba Light Festival

The Columba Light Festival celebrates the constellation Columba, the winter season, peace, unity and togetherness in the community. What better way to do it than to share a night of music with two Vancouver based bands, Said The Whale and Mother Mother!

Said The Whale:
Said the Whale is a local Vancouver band who was started in 2007 by Ben Worcester (guitar/vocals) and Tyler Bancroft (guitar/vocals). Their band grew to include Peter Carruthers (bassist), whom we've recently seen accompanying David Vertesi at Saint James Hall, Jaycelyn Brown (keyboard) and Spencer Schoening (drums). Recently, they placed second in the PEAK Summit Award for 2010 and have performed across Canada including a nationally televised set for the Canada Day celebration on Parliament Hill. This year they are nominated for a Juno award for New Group of the Year!
These are some photos taken at their show at the Columba Light Festival. Sadly, this was Peter Carruthers last performance with the band. He will be replaced by Nathan Shaw. We'll miss you Peter!

From left to right we have: Jaycelyn Brown, Tyler Bancroft, Ben Worcester, Spencer Schoening and Peter Carruthers.

Mother Mother:
Mother Mother started out as Mother releasing their first self-titled album in 2005. In 2007, they rereleased the album as Touch Up, adding two new songs and changing their name to Mother Mother. Recently they have performed at many shows and festivals including the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games concert series LiveCity. Mother Mother is made up of members Ryan Guldemond (vocals/guitar), Molly Guldemond (vocals/synth), Jasmin Parkin (vocals/keys), Jeremy Page (bass/horns) and Ali Siadat (percussions).
Mother Mother is also touring to promote their newest album, EUREKA, which will be released worldwide on March 15, 2011. They will be back in Vancouver with a couple of concerts in May!

Security man in the background. These guys were so serious the entire night.

The show was amazing! The crowd and the musicians were all really energetic despite the continuous rain and the muddy ground! The only problem with such an energetic crowd is they can't stop moving. People were pushing throughout the show and we all got yelled at by security a few times. During Mother Mother's last song, people were jumping around a lot and sadly someone broke my nose. Proof that this was an insane show! But it was totally worth it :)

If you guys were at this concert, let us know! Check out our 'contact us' page for ways to reach us! We will post your concert reviews and photos on the blog!
